Mental Health Counselor

Duties and Responsibilities: Mental health counselors work with individuals, groups and communities to improve mental health. They encourage clients to discuss emotions and experiences. Examine issues including substance abuse, aging, bullying, anger management, careers, depression, relationships, lgbtq issues, self-image, stress and suicide. They work with families and help clients define their goals.

Salary: $41,500

Education: Requirements
Mental health counselors must hold a master’s degree in counseling from an accredited institution. The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs is the governing body that overseas the accreditation of mental health counseling programs. Many mental health counselors hold a bachelor’s degree in psychology, human development, and social work.

Demand for this profession: Employment of mental health counselors and marriage and family therapists is projected to grow 19 percent from 2014 to 2024, much faster than the average for all occupations.
